Centennial Complex

Loma Linda, CA

Description

In support of a long-term strategic plan, Loma Linda University commissioned Cannon Design to provide programming, master planning, and schematic design services for the Centennial Complex, a new $65 million academic facility providing leading-edge classrooms, laboratories, exam rooms, faculty offices, and an Amphitheater Center hosting lectures, seminars, and programs. The 149,000 sf complex houses eight program components in architecturally distinct units, an approach that animates the facility and mitigates its massing. Phase one of construction includes academic and media services facilities; phase two adds a banquet/exhibition hall, foodservice, and offices devoted to student and faculty services.

A new Anatomy Pavilion accommodates more than 1,000 students studying anatomy for careers in medicine, dentistry, nursing, and public health. The Educational Technology Center features state-of-the-art computer, audiovisual, and robotic technology. In the Skills and Assessment Center, students practice diagnostic and treatment skills in real exam rooms with trained, “standardized” patients as well as simulations for life-support codes, specialized examinations and procedures, and heart and breath sounds assessment. Two amphitheaters seating 350 and 250 in the Amphitheater Center are both linked to a multimedia center fully equipped with the latest technology. An interior corridor connects the theaters to the rest of the complex. High-end architectural finishes in lobbies and corridors include wood paneling, glass handrails, terrazzo floors, and travertine stone.
