Description
A highly collaborative process lies at the heart of the development of Starin Hall, a 450-bed suite-style residence hall at the University of Wisconsin at Whitewater. Home to a national-champion wheelchair basketball team, the Whitewater campus has been designated by the University of Wisconsin system as manifesting a special focus on accommodating students with disabilities. Early in conceptual design, a workshop on universal design led by the director of the university’s Center for Disabilities and attended by staff, students, university representatives, and design team established the high level of accommodation desired in the new residence.
In support of the project’s LEED Gold certification goal, a sustainable design workshop attended by project constituents established a common awareness of sustainable design concepts to facilitate participation in later design phases. Students also toured new residence halls on two other UW campuses to explore how various design options could support and enrich their campus experience.
