“The drama of the space emanates from the trusses and wood ceiling. Furniture, flooring and lighting are appropriately understated. Opening up the ceiling to expose original steel trusses and wood ceiling deck makes all the difference. Contemporary food buffet also works well with the historic ceiling.”American Society of Interior Designers - NY Upstate/Canada East Chapter - Best of Competition
Description
The revitalization of Hickey Dining Hall, St. Bonaventure University’s largest student gathering space, has been an essential component in the campus unification and campus-life intiatives envisioned in the university’s master plan. Occupying a highly visible location adjacent to the campus’s historic quadrangle, the renovated dining hall, with an expanded servery, offers students more appealing and diverse menu selections.
To develop a contemporary dining environment, the center portion of the ceiling was removed to expose the metal trusses and welds, creating greater volume that in turn bolstered sense-of-place and the larger architectural fabric. Rich porcelain tile, quartzite stone, and horizontal wood panels form the base of the hall, with articulated plaster walls accented by wood above. Patterned vinyl and fabric materials cover the dining floor. Illumination is provided by tubular, translucent light fixtures with energy-saving lamps and uplighting that highlights the wood ceiling and trusses.
