Description
This new 151,000 sf facility embraces a “Matrix Model” of patient care that has at its foundation the principle of community re-entry through the creation of a normalizing environment. The hospital is organized around the concept of a healing village—a series of multi-story buildings with specific functions for patient care. At the core of this village is a central outdoor courtyard and metaphorical “community green”—the heart and soul of this new facility. Patients, families, visitors and staff have unrestricted access to this secure, outdoor space for social, recreational and educational uses. Enclosing the green is the primary circulation zone that serves as an indoor social rehabilitation mall.

“In keeping with the very clearly described rationale, there are nicely realized intentions here in creating a transitional place for those who are trying to re-enter the “real world.” The communal spaces and circulation relate the two L-shaped wards to the courtyard, which is central to all other elements. The design details were strong in both conception and execution.”
