An Ideas Based Practice

Karmanos Cancer Institute

Weisberg Cancer Center

Detroit, MI

Description

The Weisberg Cancer Center was designed to improve both the patient and family experience while undergoing the lengthy process of treatment. The building is a departure from conventional healthcare facilities, with architecture reflective of a warm, comfortable lodge. The building is nestled into a heavily wooded site and intentionally articulated to express the feeling of a small resort, using natural materials including stone, copper and exposed wood beams to create a welcoming environment where every space in flooded with natural light. Both private infusion bays and public waiting areas are organized around, and share views of, an outdoor garden, embracing nature as a therapeutic healing element.
