Description
An $185 phased million expansion and renovation program at the Hospital for Special Surgery—one of only two institutions in the country designated by the National Institutes of Health as a Core Center for Skeletal Integrity and recognized as among the leading orthopedic and rheumatology hospitals—posed unique planning and logistical challenges. Located in Manhattan above the FDR Drive and adjacent to the East River, program components include a 95,000 sf renovation of the hospital’s main building; two vertical expansions to this structure, totaling an additional 110,000 sf; and a new 90,000 sf building—the River Building—to harbor the hospital’s Arthroplasty Institute and Sports Medicine Institute.
