An Ideas Based Practice

Mount St. Mary's Hospital

Our Lady of Peace Skilled Nursing Facility

Lewiston, NY

Description

The design of the 155,000 sf facility addresses the keen need for the elderly to feel at home and to interact within their own environment. Organized as five units of 42 beds each and one unit of 40 beds—each unit is designed as a household resident room cluster comprised of living room, lounge and daily living spaces. Each living area contains a dining room and servery, two “great” rooms adjacent to the dining area, and two family waiting areas with fireplaces. A multifunctional room accommodates up to 100 residents for social and group activities as well as meditation and religious services.

AIA Western New York
Design Excellence Award
“A conscientious design for a program type much in need of conscientious designers. The overall plan is clearly organized and offers a desirable variety of well-lit collective and semi-private spaces. The dining areas are particularly successful. Material palette mitigates the institutional character typical of the building type. ”
