Taj, Lands End & Sea Rock Hotel Design Competition

Bandra, Mumbai India

Description

Developed for the Taj Lands End design competition in Mumbai, this concept for the Taj Hotel expresses the gesture of a wave in a refined volume shaped by parallel fins that rise, fall, bend, and extend to encompass multiple spatial experiences. Immediately iconic against Mumbai’s rectilinear skyline, the building’s graceful arc echoes the form of bays at the city’s western edge and makes visual reference to the adjacent Sea Link Bridge. At the trough of the wave, a cascade of terraces and decks extend the hotel’s outdoor event spaces into the foreshore area and connect them to the sea’s edge beyond. Within the building’s generous base, lobbies, banquet spaces, restaurants, and retail functions surround a rising skylit atrium. At mid-height of the wave’s arc, hotel guest suites enjoy dramatic city and sea views. Above, articulated private residences with spectacular perspectives and windswept verandahs create a distinguished termination point at the wave’s crest.

To protect the building from direct sunlight, the fins run vertically along the east and west façades and horizontally along the south. An architectural expression extended to the eastern side of the project complements the existing Taj Lands End hotel and its expansion so that both hotels read together as a single, elegant composition. A materials palette of local stone, polished wood, and opulent fabric extends the project’s inherent luxury with rich natural texture, reflectance, tone, and pattern. Serene by day, the hotel’s stone-clad forms turn opalescent at dusk as they capture the colors of the setting sun, reflecting the understated elegance of the Taj luxury brand and presenting a timeless architectural statement for a landmark project.
